DAY
SURGERY |
At least 70% of all foot and ankle surgery can be
safely and efficiently performed as day surgery. This means
that there is usually no need for the added expense and inconvenience
of an overnight hospital stay.
A responsible adult should be available to take the patient
home after surgery and provide home support for about 24 hours.
 |
ANAESTHESIA |
At AFAS the vast majority of all foot and ankle surgery
is performed with intravenous sedation and local anaesthetic.
Using this technique the patient has a “twilight” anaesthetic
in which they have a light sleep. Local anaesthetic is used to
numb the area to have surgery and this “block” usually lasts 24
to 48 hours. Patients have no anxiety during surgery and they
remember very little, if anything, from their surgical experience.
Most patients recover very quickly from this type of anaesthesia.
Certain procedures require the use of general anaesthesia. Your
podiatric surgeon will advise you of the most suitable anaesthetic
for your surgery. All anaesthetics will be administered by a specialist
anaesthetist who will review the patient prior to surgery.

POST
OPERATIVE CARE |
Most patients are reviewed by the podiatric surgeon
at post op day 3 or 4, either at the day surgery centre or in
the office setting. At this time all dressings and casts are changed
and on going post op care is provided and explained.
